The Arizona Diamondbacks have sold utility player Rusty Ryal to the Yomiuri Giants of the Japanese League. Ryal will follow the footsteps of his father, Mark, who spent two seasons with the Chunichi Dragons during his 16-year professional career. The 27-year-old Ryal hit .261 with three homers and 11 RBIs in 104 games with the Diamondbacks last season.

The Milwaukee Brewers and infielder Craig Counsell have agreed to a $1.4 million, one-year contract, a person familiar with the negotiations tells The Associated Press. The person spoke Tuesday on condition of anonymity because the deal won't become final until Counsell passes a physical. The 40-year-old Counsell has played each of his last four seasons in Milwaukee.
