Starting catcher Miguel Montero has agreed to a one-year, $3.2 million contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks, avoiding arbitration. The 27-year-old Montero hit .266 with nine homers and 43 RBIs in 85 games. He missed 57 games after having surgery to repair torn cartilage in his right knee. Montero tied for the Major League lead with a .996 fielding percentage and committed a career-low two errors.

The Arizona Diamondbacks have added depth to their pitching staff with a right-hander who was nearly perfect. Arizona acquired Armando Galarraga in a trade with the Detroit Tigers for minor league pitchers Kevin Eichorn and Ryan Robowski on Monday, giving the Diamondbacks another arm in what should be a pretty good rotation battle in spring training.

February may not seem like a big month for sports, but it is the transition month between football and baseball. After the Super Bowl and Pro Bowl ends, within a couple of weeks pitchers and catchers report to spring training. 2011 looks to be a promising year for Shin-Soo Choo, Carlos Santana, Grady Sizemore and the rest of the Cleveland Indians. The Arizona Diamondbacks avoided arbitration with Stephen Drew by signing the shortstop to a two-year, $13.75 million contract Tuesday. The deal includes a mutual option for a third year at a salary of $10 million. Arizona also signed arbitration-eligible left-hander Joe Saunders to a one-year, $5.5 million contract.
