The Arizona Diamondbacks have signed left-hander Mike Hampton to a minor league contract. Diamondbacks general manager Jerry DiPoto says Saturday Hampton will be used as a reliever even though he has spent much of his career as a starter. The oft-injured 38-year-old will be assigned to Triple-A Reno. Hampton went 7-10 with a 5.30 ERA for the Houston Astros last year before having shoulder surgery.

Arizona Diamondbacks hurler Brandon Webb faced batters for the first time in nearly 17 months on Saturday, throwing 52 pitches in a simulated game. Results were positive, the Arizona Republic reports. "It looks to me like he's going to pitch," pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre Jr. said. "It really does. I couldn't say that a month ago." Webb hasn't pitched in a game since opening day in 2009. He had right shoulder surgery a year ago.
