Stephen Drew received a day off Thursday when the Diamondbacks finished an 11-game road trip in Houston, the site of Drew’s most sobering day in 2009. It had nothing to do with baseball.

Drew hired a private plane and flew home to Valdosta, Ga., after the first game of the D-backs’ stop in Houston last Aug. 21 when he received a call saying his wife, Laura, was having a difficult pregnancy and might deliver their first child that night, at 25 weeks.

“She was in labor, and here I am at a game. I didn’t get back home until 4 a.m. Flying and not knowing what was going to happen … you never want anything like that,” Drew said.
